The work is based around a field recording of people singing karaoke. A cover of “Words” by the Beegees is repeated three times. First the song is played over headphones, silent to the audience, then a karaoke version is lip-synced as it plays over speakers. Finally a translation in Spanish is sung a cappella. Faltering in a foreign tongue embodies aspects of diasporic experience. Eye covering refers to a performance piece by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Vancouver Art Gallery, 2017.
Photo documentation by Scott Little, Yvonne Chew (2), and Maria Wallstam, respectively.
